Visit the Valley of the Rocks

The valley of the rocks is a unique dry valley that runs parallel to the coast, popular with walkers the area is a fabulous area to explore the Devonian coast. The valley even has its own herd of feral goats, making it a very interesting and spectacular destination to visit. There are plenty of dedicated walks in the area, taking you past many rock formations with names such as Devil’s Cheesewring and Ragged Jack.

Take a ride on the Cliff Railway

Another great example of what the Lynton & Lynmouth area has to offer is its cliff railway. Not only is this the perfect way to travel between the two villages; but also offers stunning views across the bay. Opened in 1890, the water powered tramway travels 500 metres up and down the cliff face, making it 100% environmentally friendly. You will find an open air market taking places at its top station in the summer, and other events such as floral displays taking place.

Take a stroll at Watersmeet

Another great advantage of this beautiful part of North Devon is the sheer amount of countryside and coast to explore throughout the year, including some of the most unspoiled countryside in England. Heading just slightly out, Watersmeet is a perfect day out incorporating ancient woodlands, scenic walks and a dramatic river gorge. Managed by the National Trust, Watersmeet is over 2,000 acres in size and is a great way to explore the Lyn valley. Dangling your feet in the river is a blissful way to cool off on a hot day. Don’t be too surprised if you spot a kingfisher or rare butterflies on your day out.

See some local and not so local wildlife!

If you are looking for some attractions to keep the kids entertained, Lynton & Lynmouth are close to some of North Devon’s finest attractions such as Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park. Located just 20 minutes away by car, it is a great family day out. You will find an abundance of wildlife on display such as sea lions, African lions, wolves, and of course everyone’s favourites, meerkats. With so much to see and do, you’ll find something new at every turn, while those who book ahead with the park can even experience feeding or swimming with sea lions.

Exmoor zoo is another great attraction in North Devon that is close by and offers visitors of all ages a day out not to forget. With a dedicated animal education team, you can not only wonder at the animals, but learn all about them.
