If you find yourself in North Devon and Exmoor later this year, don’t think for a minute that the fun ends with summer. There are some cracking autumn and winter events lined up for 2017. From family entertainment to festive markets, there’s plenty to look forward to, while you’ll always find a warm welcome and the best local food and drink here at The Rising Run. Here’s a quick guide to what’s on in North Devon over the coming weeks of October and November, from Bonfire Night to the Christmas buildup…

LYNTON DAY OF THE DEAD HALLOWEEN PARTY 2017 (OCTOBER 28TH)

Bringing an extra chill of excitement to Halloween celebrations this year, Lynton will be hosting its own “Night of the Dead”. Offering a slightly more grown up party, this event comes complete with live entertainment, face painting, food and drink. Adding dead good sounds on the evening will be Soul Craft, who playing funk, soul and pop to get your feet moving and create a real carnival atmosphere and a hint of South America besides North Devon. MOBILE PLANETARIUM & EXMOOR DARK SKIES FESTIVAL 2017 (19TH– 29TH OCTOBER)

One of North Devon’s unsung qualities is its lack of light pollution, making Exmoor in particular a great location to go star-gazing or night walking. As part of a special series of events for late 2017, the Space Odyssey mobile planetarium will be on tour locally (at Lynton Town Hall on 23rd October, 2pm-8pm, and 24th October at Dulverton Town Hall). LYN VALLEY CRAFT AND FARMERS MARKET (1ST SATURDAY EACH MONTH)

Whether you’re looking for finely-crafted gifts, or the pick of delicious local produce, this lively local market is the place to head early each month. It’s also a good place to buy foodie gifts and presents that you won’t find on the high street, while you’ll also often find live entertainment too.

HALLOWEEN EVENTS FOR KIDS AND FAMILIES (OCTOBER)

If you have children to entertain, the Halloween period comes with various fun events to appeal to youngsters and families. Indeed, you can take your pick between several of North Devon’s best family attractions. Indeed, Halloween week (12-29/10/2017) sees the arrival of several spooky events. Halloween Hocus Pocus at The Milky Way (Bideford) has a host of fun hand-on activities and competitions. Meanwhile Quince Honey Farm’s Halloween Week and the Big Sheep’s Fun by Day Halloween Festival have stacks of haunted rides, activities and performances. Stick around for Bonfire Night (5th Nov) and you’ll also find further events and firework displays at most of our major attractions too, such as the Big Sheep Bonfire Night Party.

FISHY, FOODIE & FESTIVE EVENTS IN CLOVELLY

A destination in its own right, there is always something to experience in this pretty North Devon village. A special Apple Day (October 28th) is the time to enjoy the spoils of the recent harvest, whether you try apple-bobbing, crafting or a drop of lovely local cider. Or you could relive this classic seaside destination’s silver-scaled glory days with the Clovelly Herring Festival (18th Nov), which is packed with tasty fish dishes, traditional craft and food stalls, and live entertainment.

As the restrictions begin to lift, there is no better place to be than North Devon. We would like to share with you our top 10 things to do as we adjust to this new temporary lifestyle, whether you are looking for a long walk along our picturesque coastline, a relaxing bike ride along the Tarka Trail, or a day at one of the best beaches in the world; North Devon can cater for everyone.

THE VALLEY OF ROCKS

We are lucky enough to have this fascinating dry valley right on our doorstep, found only half a mile outside of Lynton. Wander along the ‘North Walk’ coastal path, parallel to the Bristol Channel, and take in the beautiful view across the water, at the end of the path you’ll be met by the magnificent rock formations, if you’re brave enough you can climb to the top of these for a view that will take your breath away. The valley is home to not only the feral goats, who roam the area freely but also to one of, if not the, most picturesque cricket pitches in the U.K.

WATERSMEET

From Lynmouth, follow the East Lyn river, watch how the water carves its way through dramatic landscapes, creating one of Britain’s deepest river gorges. Eventually, you’ll find Watersmeet House hidden in the trees, the meeting place for the East Lyn and the Hoar Oak Water. On your walk, keep your eyes peeled for herons, dippers, grey wagtails and salmon!

WOOLACOMBE BEACH

The south-west is home to some of the best beaches in the world. Woolacombe is only twenty miles away from Lynmouth, with three miles of golden sand, we think it’s worth the drive! Whether you’ll be soaking up the sun, swimming or catching some waves in the sea, once you’re there you’ll realise why this beach has won numerous awards.

HOLE IN ONE

Located at the heart of Lynmouth, on the manor green, is the only 36-hole putting green left in the South West. Friendly, affordable, caters for special occasions and paired with breathtaking scenery, it’s an activity for everyone to enjoy. Currently, only one 18-hole course is open to maintain social distancing; or if putting isn’t for you, Hole In One has it’s own tennis courts and also serves a great selection of ice creams.

AFTERNOON TEA

Craving some Devonshire delights? Look no further! TARKA TRAIL

The 180 miles of cycling and walking track offers views of North Devon like no other, through the unspoiled countryside and along dramatic sea cliffs. COASTAL WALKS

The South West coast path is the longest National Trail in the country, with 630 miles of trail. Running along the coastline of Exmoor, North Devon and Cornwall, starting in Minehead and finishing at Poole Harbour. Explore cliff paths, farm tracks, open fields and wooded combes, and enjoy the spectacular views along the way. Although some parts of the coast path can be challenging, our advice is to plan ahead and stay safe.

WILDLIFE ON EXMOOR

Exmoor is home to a vast array of species, be sure to take the opportunity during your visit to enjoy as much of it as you can! Make sure your camera is charged and ready, the wildlife on Exmoor compliments the scenery beautifully, from wild horses to red deer and rare butterflies, these are moments you’ll want to capture and share with family and friends back home.

Whether you’re looking for an epic coastal walk or that spectacular holiday picture, not all locations are equal. So where should you head for in search of somewhere truly beautiful this year? Here are eight stunningly unique places to visit in North Devon, guaranteed to take your breath away.

1. MORTE POINT

Just to the north end of the famous Woolacombe Beach, this vantage point delivers a heady mix of big skies, blue waters and craggy character. Fine territory for a walk with a picnic!

2. VALLEY OF THE ROCKS

Ok, so we’re biased because it’s right on our doorstep and, yes, we featured it in our previous blog on Lynmouth and Lynton. But how often do you find such Jurassic scenery with its own colony of feral goats and one of our prettiest coastal towns all within the same small area?

3. DAMIEN HIRST’S VERITY STATUE, ILFRACOMBE

Dramatic. Daring. Beautiful. Ugly. Challenging. We can’t say for sure whether you will love this Damien Hirst statue or not, but the one certainty is that you’ll have an opinion! And even if you don’t see the pretty side of this famous sculpture, the surrounding coast path has plenty of natural beauty on offer.

4. WATERMOUTH CASTLE AND BAY

An elegant heritage alongside wild scenery. The South West Coast Path will take you right across the bay, with fine views of Watermouth Cove. Meanwhile the castle itself is also open to visitors, whether you fancy funfair rides or a peaceful walk in the gardens.

5. DUNKERY BEACON, EXMOOR

There are too many dramatic spots to mention on our nearest national park, but this is the highest point for epic views. Or for a completely different perspective, why not visit at night for commanding views in the heart of this Dark Sky Reserve?

6. WIMBLEBALL LAKE

With its blankets of wildflowers, pretty walks and great open waters, this manmade lake is full of natural beauty. 7. BAGGY POINT

8. “TARKA” COUNTRY ON THE RIVER TAW

For anyone visiting North Devon this year, the region represents a genuine escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. But as well as some of the wildest coast and country in England, there are also some truly unique activities and sites to visit. Whether you fancy meeting native wildlife, eating local delicacies or taking a special tour, here are some of the best current North Devon experiences and days out:

CROSS ANTLERS WITH THE LOCALS

Roaming freely on the hills of Exmoor, red deer are one of our most iconic creatures. The males, especially, can be truly spectacular beasts. But while they are not desperately rare on the moor, some friendly local help certainly increases your chance of a close encounter to these animals, not to mention many other species. Red Stag Safaris by Exmoor People are perhaps your best bet here, offering friendly expertise and special access to some of the best locations. Don’t forget the camera!

HIKING & GUIDED WALKS ON EXMOOR

One of the main reasons visitors come to North Devon each year is for the fantastic walking territory on offer. The options are almost limitless, but if you’re not sure where to start you’ll find some useful maps and ideas on the Visit Exmoor Site. However, another great idea for just a little extra investment is to get yourself on a guided walk. TRY FLY FISHING IN NORTH DEVON

There are some wonderfully wild places to go game fishing in and around Exmoor National Park and much of North Devon, but where do you start? That depends on whether you want easy and accessible fishing, or something altogether more wild. For the latter option, the Westcountry Angling Passport comes especially highly recommended, with some lovely fishing for trout and grayling on the Exe tributaries of Exmoor. You simply order tokens online, which are then posted at your chosen piece of river on the day. Good value too, from just £6 a day throughout the regular season (16th March to 30th Sept).

If you wish for more accessible, easy fishing open all year round though, Bratton Water is possibly your best option. It’s a pretty, well-stocked lake not too far from Barnstaple. Locals rate it especially highly for big brown trout averaging 2lbs. More here: http://www.brattonflyfishing.co.uk

With the end of 2017 now within touching distance, we are all set for a busy Christmas in Lynmouth, followed by New Year’s Eve and a lively start to 2018. We do hope you can come and join us for some good cheer before the final countdown. However, even if you have to leave it until thew New Year, here are just some of the reasons we love North Devon at this time of year:

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING & FESTIVE EVENTS IN LYNTON, LYNMOUTH & BARNSTAPLE

Even in North Devon, things are feeling decidedly frosty now and there is even talk of a rare white Christmas. We’ll believe it when we see it, but one thing you can depend on are all the colourful local markets and traders to provide good cheer, and good value, this December If you’re quick, there are still some Christmas markets to head for, including our own Lynmouth Christmas Fair (10th Dec).

Failing that, you’ll also find plenty from our local retailers, while larger regional gatherings, such as Barnstaple Pannier Market (open right through December) offer late night shopping and lots of gifts at only a short drive. Or, lastly, for those looking to shop and also keep kids happy, The Big Sheep near Bideford has Christmas Market Days on 16th & 23rd December and is a great place to take younger family members.

For those who love a taste of traditional cheer, there are also some wonderfully authentic carol services to attend locally around North Devon. The Carol Service at St. Bartholemews Church (Dec 19th) in Barbrook (EX35 6PG) is an atmospheric service to attend, not to mention a beautiful setting for Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve.

NEW YEAR’S EVE PARTIES IN LYNMOUTH & NORTH DEVON 2017

Whether it has been a vintage year for you, or one you’ll be glad to see the back of, the one guarantee on Dec 31st is a great party in Lynton and Lynmouth as we celebrate New Year’s Eve and welcome in 2018. You could hop between some of the town’s lovely pubs and venues, but with a lot of venues all ticket and likely to be busy, you may want to pick a winner and get a comfortable spot early!

Has there ever been a better time to visit North Devon for food lovers? With cracking seafood, craft booze and so many artisan producers, we doubt it. Add brewery tours, farmers markets and various brilliant Devon food festivals and you have one of the finest foodie breaks anywhere in the UK! Here are six must try (or must taste?) experiences and places to visit on our recommended list:

BEER TASTING & CRAFT BREWERIES IN NORTH DEVON

Do you love real ales and craft beers? If so, there are a couple of sites well worth visiting in the North. Small but perfectly formed, the Madrigal Brewery produce some real local gems that will satisfy both the traditionalist (try Monkey’s Fist “North Devon Old Ale”) and the fan of new world beers (North Coast Voodoo IPA is a must!). Their shop is open most days till 2:30 pm.

Should you need a bit of an alibi to get your craft beer fix though, The Big Sheep is another great option, where you will find the Country Life Brewery . Dads can have a quiet tipple while the kids enjoy the many play areas at this major attraction. And with various lip-smacking real ales on offer, it would be rude not to try a pint, or perhaps even leave with a keg of the good stuff if you’re really taken!

QUINCE HONEY FARM AND BEE WORLD

Like to see exactly how your food is produced? Bee World is a unique attraction in South Molton that not only gives visitors an intimate look at honey production, but the chance to have a go at being a bee keeper! There is also an onsite café and shop, selling the most delicious organic Devon honey, straight from the hive. All in all, it’s a refreshingly different day out that all ages will enjoy. A bustling local market is always a good place to taste and browse local food to your heart’s content, not to mention picking up some treats and gifts for friends and family. On the first Saturday of each month, Lynton Farmers Market serves up a feast of local fare, right on our doorstep (you might well find some of our chefs’ favourite producers!). There are various other places to buy fine food and drink too though, from the Barnstaple Pannier Market, to regular markets in Combe Martin, Ilfracombe and South Molton ( click here for days and times ).

CLASSIC SCRUMPY AND CIDER VINEGAR, STRAIGHT FROM THE ORCHARDS AT OSTLERS

There were once literally hundreds of types of cider apple in Devon and the Westcountry as a whole, but sadly our traditional orchards have steadily declined over the decades. This is what makes Ostlers Cider Mill such a welcome presence in North Devon. Excellent traditional cider is just part of the story too, as they also produce award-winning cider vinegars and chutneys. A huge amount of TLC goes into all their produce- and boy can you taste it! LYN FOOD FEST

Of course, the other great way to get an authentic taste of North Devon is to attend one of the various annual food and drink events. Catch the Exmoor Market on the second to last Sunday of each month at Lynmouth Manor right through the year from April 23 onwards. EXMOOR WALKS, TALKS AND MORE (VARIOUS DATES THROUGHOUT 2017)

Along with craggy scenery and some splendid walks, there is also a lively calendar of events to enjoy on Exmoor this spring, summer and autumn. HONEYMEAD FESTIVAL (PARRACOMBE, EXMOOR MAY 5TH 2017)

What could be better than classical music in an idyllic setting, brought to you by world class musicians? The gathering is the brainchild of talented violinist Tamsin Waley-Cohen, who brings a stellar cast to rural Exmoor each year for a mesmerizing performance. This year’s festival includes works by Haydn, Shuman and Schubert, with the Albion Quartet at the strings. Ticket prices also include canapes, while all profits go towards the North Devon Hospice. ROCK, COMEDY AND CARS AT THE LYNMOUTH CLASSIC WEEKEND (9-11 JUNE)

Offering three days of beautiful cars, big sounds and belly laughs, this weekender brings a whole host of fun to the North Devon Coast in June. There will be comedy with a topical feel on the Friday as BBC featured star Dr Phil Hammond brings his “Health Revolution” show to Lynmouth Town Hall. Saturday the 10th welcomes top tribute act “Hats Off to Led Zeppelin” while Sunday sees all manner of awesome cars from Ferraris to vintage classics make their way from Lynton in a grand display. LYNMOUTH RAFT RACE (SATURDAY 22ND JULY)

Combining rafts, fancy dress and ballistic weapons, the fantastic Lynmouth Raft Race makes a wonderfully crazy spectacle ever summer. A whole flotilla of homemade craft take part every year, from the sublime to the ridiculous. Some impress, some don’t quite make the grade; all are subject to a mixture of support along with flour bombs and buckets of water. Who will your money be on this year? It’s anyone’s guess at this brilliant free event, which will entertain visitors of all ages. Starting time is usually around 5pm , to give local rafters time to sure things up and spectators time to arm themselves.

From Christmas shopping to family events and entertainment, we are all set for a buoyant and busy festive season in North Devon for 2016! Whether you are looking for seasonal food and drink, or places to buy gifts for friends and loved ones, there promises to be something for everyone as we head closer to the big day. Below are just some of the highlights we’re looking forward to this December. We hope to see you at the Rising Sun Inn for excellent food, a warm fireplace and plenty of good cheer.

LIGHT UP LYNTON (THURS 1ST DEC, 5PM) & LATE NIGHT CHRISTMAS SHOPPING (SAT 3RD DEC, FROM 5:30PM)

A great way to start the countdown to Christmas, these two community events are an annual favourite in the town, with something for all ages. On Thursday, the fun begins at 5pm around the Town Hall, when Lynton will get a new lease of light, along with mulled wine, carols and other festivities. Meanwhile, the weekend is the time to come and shop at your leisure, as local retailers stay open late to offer lantern-lit Christmas shopping.

CHRISTMAS FAYRE (11TH DEC), CRAFT WORKSHOPS & WINTER EVENTS AT EXMOOR NATIONAL PARK CENTRE, LYNMOUTH

Lynmouth’s Exmoor Park Centre (EX35 6EQ) is the setting for this gathering of local craft and gift stalls (11 Dec 11:00-4pm) , which is well worth a look if you’re in town. Especially so if you have children with you, as there are free crafts and activities for young ones on the day. For older guests there are also special talks and guided walks from the experts throughout the colder months, as well as some terrific one day workshops and mini crafting events, including Stained Glass and Art Workshops. CHRISTMAS CONCERTS, SHOPPING AND SANTA FESTIVAL AT PORLOCK (VARIOUS DATES IN DECEMBER)

The pretty small town of Porlock offers an idyllic detour at any time of year, but is especially nostalgic at Christmas, offering a taste of the festive season with a more traditional feel in place of huge retailers and the usual shopping rush. A lively little program of events includes some delightful variety too, with a Christmas Gift Fair and Concerts, Late Night Shopping and the towns own “Santa Festival” all to look forward to. SANTA SPECIAL TRAINS WITH LYNTON & BARNSTAPLE RAILWAY

(THROUGHOUT DECEMBER 2016)

For train lovers of any age, these special Christmas train rides in North Devon are a wonderful way to enjoy fine views and living history. Youngsters are in for a special treat too, as every junior passenger receives a gift direct from Santa. An ideal festive day out for the family we think. ANTIQUES AT SOUTH MOLTON PANNIER MARKET (18 DEC 2016/ EVERY 3RD SUNDAY MONTHLY)

For any compulsive magpie or gift buyer, South Molton’s monthly antiques gathering has plenty of vintage treasure to browse through, whether clocks, candle holders or retro toys are your thing.
